Burgeoning Masters Hockey Scene at Bury

While the junior and youth hockey at Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club is flourishing the numbers of older players continues to increase as do the number of those older members playing at regional and national levels.

Listed below are the members of Bury St Edmunds hockey club who played representative hockey during 2017.

For ladies the Masters age groups begin at 35yrs, for men it is 40yrs, and progress in 5 year intervals.

Ladies Over 40
Julie Dunger (Capt) Suffolk.

Ladies Over 50
Kate Bedford, Julie Grayling & Jet Konrath played for East in the Regional tournament. Kate and Jet went on to represent England in both the Home Internationals and the European Championship in Tilburg, Holland where they got Silver medals, losing out to Holland in the final.

Ladies Over 55
Sharon Holton played for East in the Regional tournament and came 2nd to the West.
Sharon was injured for much of the season and so was not able to retain her place in the England squad.
Kate and Sharon are Selectors for the Eastern region ladies Over 50 squads.

Men Over 50
David Chiang, Robert Dyball & Mark Dykes played for Suffolk in the Eastern Region competition, where they came 1st.
Paul Calver and Ian Konrath played for East in the Regional tournament and came 2nd behind West (Silver medals).

Men Over 55
Martin McCourt represented Scotland in the European Championships in Tilburg, Holland.
Tony Bass & David Chiang played for East in the Regional tournament, finishing 2nd.
Tony Bass & Mark Dykes represented Wales (i) coming 3rd in the Home Internationals and (ii) 4th in the European Championships in Tilburg.

Men Over 60
Norman Ballard & Chris Blake played for Suffolk in the County Championships, losing to Surrey in the 2nd round.

Men Over 65
John Grinham & Mark Hollingsworth played for East in the regional Tournament, coming out winners (Gold medal)

Men Over 70
Norman Ballard & Chris Blake represented East in the Regional Tournament, finishing a disappointing 4th.
Norman went on to represent England in the Home Internationals (Cardiff) and the European Championships in Glasgow where the team won Gold.

Men Over 75
George Hazell represented England in the European Championship in Glasgow and also won Gold.
Alan Dures was a selector, manager and reserve ‘keeper for the England team.
