Brave Bury fall to unfortunate defeat
Bury 2s restarted the East League Division 2NE with an away trip to table topping Sudbury.
Bury knew Sudbury would be a direct and aggressive attacking prospect, with lots of familiar players, and set up to dominate in midfield. Early half chances went Sudbury’s way as they probed the Bury defence of Whiting, Calver and Mitford with long balls but Sullivan was equal to their efforts. Chapman almost put Bury ahead after 15 mins when his strike hit the near post after some structured build up opened the Sudbury defence.
However the rebounded ball was quickly cleared and a long ball allowed Sudbury to take the lead after Sullivan’s initial save dropped conveniently for the home team striker to score.
The Bury midfield of Stanton, Wiley, Armitage, Bastow, Peck and Chapman marshalled the central area and it was deserved reward when Mitford converted from a short corner to even the game.
Bury took stock at half time, knowing they were more than equal to their opponents and looking to turn their midfield superiority into attacking outcomes. Grisby, Walshe and Green up front worked to find opportunities for release and the 2nd half continued as the 1st. With 15 mins left Sudbury won the ball in the edge of the Bury D and found a spare man at the back post. His shot hit his own players foot to go into the goal, however much to Burys frustration the goal stood. In the post decision discussions Calver was given a green card to join Walshe on the sideline. Bury managed the setback and when back to full strength pushed to level the game but couldn’t convert opportunities. While Bury pushed for an equaliser, Sudbury again found a long direct ball that caught Bury out with 2 mins to play and ease Sudbury’s concerns.
A tough loss for Bury, but a great performance that deserved more reward in a season that has seen the team of blended ages produce some dominant hockey.
