After a weekend with no match, the mighty Bury 2s took a strong side to Norwich City sitting just above them in the league table.
Having completed an invigorating warm up with only a few scavenged hockey balls dating back to the last century and on a pitch that the home side almost refused to warm up on because it played so differently to the match surface, the team was ready for a tough game against a side that had conceded only 5 points at home so far this season.
Missing Paul Calver in central defence, Jake Charles had some big shoes to fill. However, he played well making some excellent aerial clearances and leaving it to others to offer the ball freely to the opposition’s attackers.
The team got off to a strong start and after only a few minutes went a goal ahead from a Ryan Mitford subo short corner routine that the side has had a lot of success with this season. An important deflection from the captain saw the ball fly safely into the back of the opposition’s goal. Bury had the better of the first half but the home side stole a goal back on the break after a couple of missed opportunities by Bury to intercept.
1:1 at half time flattered City and Bury knew that three points were there for the taking. However, a more disciplined second half from Norwich resulted in several chances for the home side but MOM Gus Sullivan made some exceptional stops to keep the Bury team in the game. The stale mate could not be broken by either team and the match finished with each side taking a point, a result that was probably fair and that Bury would have accepted beforehand.
Some mediocre individual performances this week but a good team effort.
Finally, a special mention to Chris Chapman who sported a double denim look from the eighties that took some of the heat off Ryan Mitford and Ali English for their recent debatable fashion choices.
