The Great Escape

4-1 win away at Newmarket
Final game of the season and with Bury knowing they must win against an in form Newmarket team hope seemed almost lost. With Lowestoft just needing to win against Sudbury to guarantee their survival and Sudbury needing to win to have any chance of staying up Sudbury beat the bruisers from Lowestoft meaning Bury only needed a draw against Newmarket to stay up.
The teams were on the pitch - Bury were looking at an abundance of talent and experience against us. The very young and inexperienced Bury team made it a David v Goliath game. From the first whistle Bury fighting for their lives put in a performance of their season, Paul Whiting opened the deadlock with a thunderous strike past the helpless Newmarket keeper, this rattled Newmarket who stepped up their game and got a goal back five mins later. Fortune then struck when Ali English drove down the wing and went to pass to Whiting on the back post for a tap in only to fluff his pass straight in to the goal! Again Newmarket were rattled! Newmarket passed the ball from the pushback across the pitch for Ali English to read the pass and intercept with pace dribbling past the defenders and pass the ball across the D for new boy Felix Jones to put Bury 3-1 up at half time. The second half loomed and Bury knowing they were playing well had confidence and fear knowing a draw would be good enough. 15 mins in to the second half the ball landed to Henry Whiley from a great team build up play, Whiley just had to put it in the open goal and that he did with ease. Bury won 4-1 against all the odds, these young boys stood up to be counted putting in performances worthy of a first team place, next season can’t come quick enough.
