Still In The Mix

Draw keeps promotion hopes alive
In their penultimate game of the season Bury travelled to Dereham with a depleted squad, needing a result to keep their promotion hopes alive.
The opening exchanges were end to end with few clear cut chances, the Bury keeper advanced out of her goal to make a clearance with her stick but it wasn’t until the 7th minute when Lottie Adams won a short corner that the visitors had a chance on goal. Izzy Gingell found Mazz Chapman but the shot was cleared. Bury kept the pressure on and a pass from Georgina Kelly to Bex Selway in open play saw her shot blocked. Dereham won their first short in the 10th minute but Jet Konrath was on hand to make the crucial block for Georgina Kelly to make the clearance. The home team kept the pressure on but hard working defensive play from Emma Whiting, Jessica Konrath and Bex Selway kept the danger at bay. Dominique Dyball made an explosive break in the 19th minute but the ball went too wide to get the shot away. As Bury rallied to gain control Izzy Gingell found space in the D to slot the ball away to make it 0-1 to the visitors. Relegation threatened Dereham needed a result and were pushing forward but Bury wanted to extend their lead and Katie Bedford struck a dangerous ball into the Dereham D and a diving Mazz Chapman made contact but steered the ball wide rather than into the goal. The half finished 0-1.
Dereham won short corners either side of the break but Maddie Stuart was in place to save both in the Bury goal. However, in the 40th minute another Dereham short saw the ball struck wide from the right into the net to level 1-1. The game was not going according to plan for Bury and things got worse in the 47th minute when a mix up in the defence fell to a Dereham forward who slotted a second goal into the net to make it 2-1. Bury were rocked by this and it took them a little time to regain their composure. During this time Bury still had to defend as they looked for the equaliser, Madelyn Godfrey performing a crucial defensive tackle in the Bury D one on occasion. Bury started to look more threatening again with 15 minutes to go, Dominique Dyball and Katie Bedford fizzing balls into the D trying to find a player, then with 5 minutes to go the ball found Izzy Gingell near the penalty spot who spun and shot the equaliser into the Dereham goal, 2-2 . The game ended frenetically with Bex Selway and Jet Konrath working hard to gain control of the game in midfield and defence but Bury were unable to find a way through to force a winner and the game ended 2-2.
A disappointing result but enough to keep Bury in contention for promotion as other results went their way. A thrilling finale to the season awaits next week when the top four teams all play each other in two promotion deciding games.
