5-2 win secures promotion
So it all came down to the final match of the season. Watton were losers away to North Norfolk leaving them 2 points clear in second place meaning a win for Bury or Dragons would see the promoted. A perfect setting at Culford on a beautiful sunny afternoon with a enthusiastic crowd in attendance.
Bury started with clear intent with several waves of attacks with 2 shots hitting the post of the Norwich goal, an Izzy Gingell shot from a short and a Dominique Dyball effort from open play. All in the first 3 minutes, were Bury going to dominate or was it going to be so near but so far afternoon? There was not a long wait for the deadlock to be broken, in the 7th minute Mazz Chapman found some space in the D and slotted home to make it 1-0. The Dragons reacted and in the 9th minute the won there first short but they shot wide. Bury were on the attack again and in the 11th minute they found the back of the net only to be denied by the umpires whistle for a Norwich foot and a short corner was given. However, justice prevailed and a well worked move from Katie Bedford to Dominique Dyball saw her shot fly into the corner to make is 2-0. Then a 5 minute spell which rattled the home team, first a wayward bury pass fell to a Dragons forward who was clear on goal and steered her shot pass the advancing Bury keeper to make it 2-1. It was end to end action with both teams making dangerous breaks but it was the visitors who found the equaliser in the 19th minute to make it 2-2. Panic could have set in for the home team but they kept calm and continued to play a good passing game and won another short in the 20th minute. Soon after the Dragons made a break but Maddie Stuart in the Bury goal made a double save and the danger was cleared. The home team continued to press and in the 27th minute one another short and following a goalmouth scramble Millie Collins calmly lifted the ball into the net to make it 3-2. The half continued with Bury in control with chances falling to Bex Selway, Kerry O’Boyle in open play and with three minutes to go 2 short corners in quick succession saw the home team end the first half with a slender lead.
The second half began end to end with 35 minutes remaining of the season, Bury won another short but the keeper saved, the home defence was working hard with hard work from Jet Konrath, Georgina Kelly, Amy Morris and Millie Collins keeping the Dragons at bay seeking an equaliser. But Bury were desperate to kill the game off, in the 45th minute Lottie Adams had a shot saved, however, Norwich were always looking to break and Emma Whiting and Georgie Darby made key interceptions. Mazz Chapman went close again with a shot going wide but in the 55th minute skilful work from Izzy Gingell saw her lay the ball off to Dominique Dyball to slot home her second of the match to make it 4-2. Bury now we’re in control and looking to kill the game and only 2 minutes later Dominique Dyball was again in attack and her deflected shot went in to make it 5-2 to the home team and one foot in the promotion place. Less than 15 minutes to go and Bury were not going to let their hold on the game slip, they moved the ball around well as they had all game and we still looking to extend their lead. Izzy Gingell had a shot saved, Bex Selway rounded the keeper but saw her shot saved on the line by a Norwich defender and a Madelyn Godfrey run and cross/shot found Mazz Chapman bur her shot was just wide.
But the game finished with Bury on top and well deserved winners after a hard fought campaign. This was a disciplined and assured performance to show what this team are capable of.
Player of the match.... All of them.
