On a very cold, wet morning BSE3s welcomed Sudbury 2s. The game started with both teams in no mood to hang about and a middle of the pitch battle began in earnest. It was the visitors who had the best chance of the early exchanges but goalkeeper Kerry Woods had it well covered. The defence worked hard to cover for each other and keep a strong attacking duo under control. At the other end a penalty corner was saved on the line by a Sudbury defender. The exchanges of attack came and went and at half time the score remained 0-0.
The second half continued in much the same vein but it was now the turn of Bury to press further up the pitch and to use the flanks well. The midfielders worked tirelessly and the forwards began to see more and more of the ball. Indeed it was the home side who came close several times. One from Mazz Chapman whose diving deflection somehow stayed out and another when Romilly Findlay hit the post from close range.
Then the visitors fought back and several shots rained in from the hard hitting strikers. Bury held their nerve and on the odd occasion when they were beaten the Sudbury attack managed to hit the feet of their own players in front of goal or be stopped by Keeper Kerry Woods.
But the visitors eventually broke the deadlock with a mistimed pass from the home side which was then struck towards goal only to see a defender parry the ball back to the rushing attacker who struck it into the goal.
Bury were not fazed and continued to attack and several other chances went close. With only two minutes remaining, Bury won a short corner. The ball was slipped to the left and although the original shot was saved, the rebound fell to Shazz Holton and she buried it into the left hand corner.
The last attack of the game fell to Sudbury but GK Kerry Woods made two further saves along with some fine defending to keep the score lines even and a draw seemed a fair result to this exciting game.
Star player awarded to Kerry Woods!
