Bury over 50's win in Kent

If you haven't already heard, but you may have done since I've been shouting it from the rooftops, we had a resounding success in our match yesterday against Marden Russets in the EH Over 50s Cup. We won 7 - 0.

The headline could have said "Thompson leads the way with a hat-trick", or it might have stated "Herod rounds off a convincing win with a great individual goal", BUT neither headline tells the full story. From the very first move we dominated play. We played the opposition off the pitch. Passing was slick and confident. Movement off the ball was excellent. Errors were few and far between. We harassed the opposition when they were in possession, and consequently forced them into making passes which went astray or out of play. This was a consummate performance. Welcome 'Team Bury'.

The statistics will show that our first score came from open play, after ten minutes, when Tony Bass and Adey Moulam threaded their way through the field, passing the ball between them, and once in their D Tony passing across the 'keeper for Adey to slap the ball into an empty net. Play was more or less even for twenty minutes, although we always looked the more dangerous. Two minutes before half time Tim Thompson found himself a couple of yards from the goal line, latched onto a rebound from the ' keeper, stabbed the ball in to make it 2-0.
On 42 minutes Tim Thompson again found himself picking up a rebound, this time from a short corner strike, and made no error in finding the net. Five minutes later Tim completed his hat-trick with a fine shot from the edge of the D. From this point there was no way back for Marden.

But we never gave them that chance, as we closed down their players at every opportunity, and we were cool and collected in possession.
On 55 minutes a short corner routine allowed Dibble to slap in from close to the goal line. Two minutes later Tony Bass was rewarded for all his effort with a well judged strike. In the closing minutes and with 20 players in our half, a long ball from Bass found Jerry Herod unmarked on their 22m line, and he confidently took the ball to the keeper, rounded him and scored a clever individual goal.
BUT all the scores were as a result of disciplined play, lots of support, and teamwork. Well done chaps.

You may have also seen we meet Harleston in the quarter finals, at home, on the 10th March. Watch this space for further info.
