Hockey Heatwave

On a very unusual warm October afternoon BSE U12 girls started their season at their Home ground at Culford School. This year the U12 girls are fielding 3 teams: 2 in Pool A and 1 in Pool B.

Pool B
BSE 3 v Felixstowe 2 (3 – 1)
Ipswich 1 v BSE 3 (1 – 0)
BSE 3 v IES 2 (0 – 3)

The first game with Felixstowe 2 was evenly matched at the start. However, Felixstowe managed to take the first advantage and scored the opening goal. BSE 3 replied with a shot just wide of the goal by Anastasia Simmons. Some good defence and mid field action from Lottie John and Lottie Holmes paved the way for Anastasia to score levelling the match 1-1. This was followed in quick succession by a second goal from Alice Prentice backed up with some strong work from Addie Hafermann. BSE continued to exert pressure setting up Millie Hansgate to score a third goal for BSE 3.

The second game against Ipswich 1 started well. Bethany Woodruff exhibited some good goalkeeping skills during a succession of Ipswich short corners. In fact, both sides were evenly matched until Ipswich found a break in the last run of play and scored the only goal of the game.

The final match against IES 2 saw both sides play some excellent fast hockey. However, IES capitalised on the breaks which led to 2 quick goals. BSE 3 defended well from the short corners through Esme Smith and by Amy Bradford in goal. Although IES took advantage of a break, scoring a third goal.

Pool A
BSE 1 v IES 1 (0 – 1)
BSE 2 v Felixstowe 1 (1 – 0)
BSE 1 v Sudbury 1 (2 – 0)
BSE 1 v BSE 2 (1 – 0)

The first match for BSE 1 was against IES 1. Both sides played well with Olivia Hyndman and Olivia Barber working well in defence and Matilda Grant and Josie Gooderham playing well up front. IES continually exerted pressure winning several short corners which were well defended by Bex Meekings in goal. However, a strong break from IES led to the opening goal. BSE 1 continued to push up the pitch although were unable to even up the match.

On the other pitch BSE 2 was up against Felixstowe 1. Both teams played well with BSE 2 working well in defence through Ella Sherfield and Abigail Bushell, in mid field with Carmen Thornton and Imogen Callahan and up front with Lucy Stanton and Annabel Ball. BSE 2 continued to exert pressure, leading to a strong opening goal from Arabella Stockdale. Any pressure from Felixstowe was countered with some good saves by Kerry Woods in goal.

The second match for BSE 1 was against Sudbury 1. This time BSE 1 were strong from the start. Olivia Barber and Olivia Hyndman proved resilient in defence, Lulu Surti was superb in mid defence and Katie Slark-Hollis and Katie Randall proved a formidable duo in mid field and up front feeding the ball well with the rest of the team. This concerted effort by the team resulted in an opening goal from Matilda Grant and not long after a second goal from Georgia Wishlade.

The game between BSE 1 and BSE 2 saw friendship firmly put aside. Both sides worked each other hard, attacking and defending well. Isabelle Trollope worked well in mid defence for BSE 1 and Lilia Payne and Abigail Bushell worked well in defence for BSE 2. When BSE 1 attacked from the D, Kerry Woods exhibited good goalkeeping skills. Katie Slark-Hollis, BSE 1, narrowly missed a shot on goal. Arabella Stockdale, Lucy Stanton and Imogen Callahan, BSE 2, exerted a good deal of pressure on BSE 1. However, BSE 1 attacked, winning a short corner. This was taken quickly by Katie Slark-Hollis, setting up Georgia Wishlade to score.
