Finally – a Sunday with Positive Temperatures

Sunday 28th January saw our re-arranged second game of the EH Championship matches and Bury were away against Bedford Hockey Club. Due to a number of factors (largely weather related), this is the first time that all of the girls had played together since 12th November. This wasn’t at all evident with Bury controlling the game from the start.

An early goal from a firmly struck Daisy Alfred-Allen short corner got their noses in front and Lottie Cornwall doubled the lead with a well worked goal minutes later. Then against the run of play, Bedford halved the deficit. The Bury girls were shaken but soon got back into their stride and were playing some excellent passing hockey.

The defence, backed by goalkeeper Maddie Stuart, were solid with Stella Wilkinson, Olivia Coe and Maddie Green moving the ball around well. Francesca Konrath was a livewire as ever, attacking and defending with vigour. With it looking like a half time score of 2-1, both Daisy and Lottie scored again to see bury finish the half leading 4-1.

The second half started well and some good running up front from Sophie Scarff and Louisa Gooderham saw the Bedford team stretched. This allowed both Zynia Delglyn, battling through with a high temperature, and Bella Vendy to move through to score from midfield.

Some fantastic work and running by both Emily Fairs and Emma Boyle allowed Bury to firmly control the game, barely letting Bedford anywhere near the D. Any time they did, Maddie Stuart was equal to the task and her kicking and clearances were excellent – including one powerful kick that nearly led to a further goal.

This was a great team performance with everyone playing their part – the next game is away at Pelicans and hopefully we will see a similar performance.

Great work by Jet Konrath for her coaching today, and also to Julie Dunger for her umpiring – as ever, it is greatly appreciated.

Bedford HC provided some excellent hospitality after the game - many thanks to them too.
