Babet Denied

The possibility that at least three team members might not be able to make the game due to flooding as Storm Babet swept through wasn’t great for the nerves of the captain or coach. But fortunately a dry night and some careful driving got our selected 13 to Colchester. Then it was announced we were going for the no goalie tactic again. Not everyone was convinced...

Despite a slow start - again - and a few worrying moments, the team began to get its game together. We kept our shape, started passing more quickly and launched our younger legs to run at space. These are classic 4s tactics and chances started to come as we penned Colchester in. After a few misses, not good for the coaching nerves, we started to convert the melees. We love scruffy goals! Being 4-0 up at half-time gave the team much more confidence about the no goalie thing and the benefits of having an extra outfield player.

We stepped things up in the second half. We started avoiding their number 63 who thwarted much on the day; and we stopped their young right winger, who looks a good prospect, who had been causing us problems. Credit to their keeper for withstanding a lot of the barrage but another 4 goals were added. Our K pop band, Issy Snell (1), Jazz Westcott (1), Katie Green (3) and Kathryn Mitchell (3) were the scorers. Sue Yeates claims the clean sheet with three goal-line stops from the three corners conceded. But everyone fought for the clean sheet as well as the goals.

Coach and parent cheer leaders were impressed today. We had a strong team on a week with excellent availability, apart from in the goalkeeping department, across the club. Colchester never gave up and made us defend, so we earned this win.

Now we have another week off before a home game against the 5s in a table topping clash.
