A great win in challenging circumstances

The 4s travelled to Felixstowe for an attractive 3.45pm start against Felixstowe 2s. While the weather was unexpectedly fine, if not overly warm, the opposition was unexpectedly strong, really very strong, for a team languishing near the bottom of the table.
It rapidly became clear that the result could not be taken for granted and that the 4s were in for a fight. So much so that we went 1-0 down after a well worked Felixstowe move. While Bury created a lot of pressure, their opposition were dangerous on the break and the possibility of conceding a second goal was very real. That risk was increased by an unfortunate injury to Claire Jefferies-Wilson (a ball to the face deflected off her own stick), a green card for Jen Clark (never trust an umpire not to argue with another umpire!) and a (thankfully short term) injury to Amber Sharp just before half time. As we only had 12 players Claire nobly returned to the pitch despite her right eye being only half open.
It was credit to the spirit of the Bury players - and the half time refreshments provided as always by Kathryn Mitchell - that the team started strongly in the second half. Everyone played their parts, but particular mentions go to Eliza Westcott and Bryony Reeves whose energy and commitment in the midfield was impressive. Without their hard work Bury would not have equalised, with Amber Sharp scoring on 45 minutes, and then taken the lead, with Kathryn Mitchell adding to her impressive tally for the season after 60 minutes. It was fortunate that Felixstowe subsequently put the ball wide when it seemed like they couldn't miss. Despite a late injury to Aoife O'Gorman, who had an excellent game in both defence and midfield, Bury hung on for the win. The captain and vice-captain were proud of the whole team for mounting such an effective come back and showing true resilience.
Our thanks to Tim Hollins who came along to manage us in Keith Yeates' absence. And to all the spectators who braved the cold to watch a game extended by the numerous injuries.
It is a top of the table clash next week against Castaways. While Felixstowe 2s were a good preparation for this important match we just have to hope that injuries and availability issues don't impact on our prospects.
