Bury Ladies 4s welcomed Colchester 4s to Culford on Saturday morning. With illness and injury leaving Colchester without a keeper, a reverse of the position in the away fixture, the challenge for Bury was to deal with the extra on field player against them.
The suggested answer was to move the ball early, go around the crowd and then get the ball on target. Sharon Holton did the final part twice in the opening five minutes to secure an early 2-0 lead. The game settled with Bury in the ascendancy but over running with the ball allowed Colchester to smother many attacks whilst trying to maintain a threat. Sheer weight of pressure, however, meant chances had to come. Jen Clark scored twice and Sharon completed a first half hat-trick, with several goal line saves being made.
The second half aims were to get the passing game going but, with a couple of exceptions, Bury struggled to let the ball do the work. Creditably Colchester never stopped trying to deny space, successfully given we commonly score more in the second half, but more goals came through Kathryn Mitchell (Bella Bridgeman assist), Georgina Northeast-Roffey and Jen to complete her hat-trick.
With the break next week the 4s return to action in a fortnight against the 5s in a table topping clash.
