Bury Ladies 4s travelled to Ipswich to play Castaways on the less than optimal - sandy and patched - Gainsborough sports centre pitch. Having lost the home fixture 2-4, and without our coach, we knew it was going to be a tough fixture.
Castaways started strongly and put Bury under early pressure. While Bury struggled to create any flowing moves the whole team was resolute in defence, with Katie Huddart making a number of excellent saves. The post came to Bury's rescue at one point, and Sue Yeates pulled a ball off the line that may or may not have been a goal. The umpire couldn't be sure so rightly didn't give it. While Castaways always looked more likely to score Bury continued to work hard and were rewarded when Jazz Westcott slotted the ball home after a good bit of attacking play on the break. Unfortunately Castaways equalised before half-time from a well worked move.
The second half was a more even affair as Bury concentrated on releasing passes earlier and increasing the ball speed. With less than 5 minutes to go Bury hit the (other) post after executing a beautiful move down the right. Nikita Eastes then made a great tackle with 2 minutes to go to break down a very promising Castaways move. So it was honours even at the final whistle.
The draw was a good result for Bury in what was a highly competitive game where the whole team worked hard for each other. It was a reminder of just how much harder life will be next season if we are promoted.
Particular thanks to Neil MacDonald for being our travelling umpire, to Jamie Grove for running the watch, and to all our supporters (including Ella Brisbane's nan and nephew).
Next week we're back to Gainsborough sports centre to play Christchurch in the penultimate match of the season. Minus our captain who will be on her honeymoon! Have a great time Ella.
