This match saw Bury 5’s meeting their old adversary from two years previous when both teams were in the lower division. 2018 saw Sudbury promoted to division 5NE, with Bury following them in 2019. With Sudbury settled comfortably in the middle of this league and Bury the new arrivals, a tough game was in the cards for the visitors. Taking on lessons learned from the previous week, Bury started strong and matched Sudbury blow for blow throughout the first half, which saw the score level at nil-nil. Bury had the advantage of more attacking short corners, but failed to convert them to goals, which would almost certainly have put them in the lead.
The second half started off much like the first, but Sudbury had spotted weaknesses and changed tactics, increasing pressure in the middle of the field and pressing every advantage, forcing Bury to play defensively. Despite several brilliant saves from the Bury keeper (who gains the man of the match award), the pressure told with Sudbury racking up three goals to end up well deserved winners. However, keeping in mind this was a well drilled Sudbury side with a lot of experienced players, Bury can be proud of their performance. If they can repeat this form through the rest of the season they should rest comfortably in this new league. If they can repeat their first half performance they can expect a top tier finish. The trick when moving to a new league is to settle, learn and build. This Bury team are doing just that.
