St Neots late goal not enough

Bury faced St Neots 1 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, desperate to pick up points after two back to back losses.

The away team looked brighter in the opening stages with a fast paced attack and won a short in the 5th minute which found the back of the goal but was disallowed for being too high from the initial shot. St Neots continued to press and Bury were unable to gain possession and mount a meaningful attack of their own. The breakthrough came from the visitors in the 13th minute with a well worked goal from open play to make it 0-1. This caused a reaction from the Bury team mid way through the half who were able to start to gain more of the ball and start to create chances of their own falling to Annabel Yates, Holly Turbill and Ella Dowling. However, St Neots still threatened and the half ended with Bury sat deep soaking up the pressure and unable to get the ball up the pitch.

With the half time team talk from Nick Thorpe still ringing in the Bury team's ears they won a short from an direct attack straight from the pushback, this was the chance they needed and Sara Havers hit home with a stinging shot to even the scores 1-1. Bury looked a different team from the first half with much better passing and movement and after 40 minutes the home team won 3 short corners in quick succession one of which went agonisingly close with a Ella Dowling shot pinging off the post and away to safety. The best move of the match came in the 47th minute when Dominque Dyball played a cross field pass from the left side of defence to Arianne Dyball on the right wing who then passed the ball up field to Mazz Chapman in the D who skilfully beat the keeper 1 on 1 to make it 2-1. The attacks kept coming from Bury and in the 55th minute Ella Dowling swept up a ball parried from the keepers glove following a stinging shot and made sure by slotting the ball home and making the score 3-1. For once it wasn't Bury chasing the game and they kept their composure as St Neots tried to reduce the arrears. Maddie Stuart was on hand in the Bury goal to make a number of stops but they weren't allowed to play their attacking game and the home team kept in control in midfield. With 2 minutes on the clock the visitors found a way through with a cracking shot from the edge of the D to make it 2-3 but Bury ran down the clock in the closing seconds to ensure the 3 points.

Definitely a game of 2 halves but a well earned win for Bury Ladies with a fine second half performance.
