L2s Vs Cambridge South was going to be another tough week against 3rd place in the league, and a Bury side that only had one sub and missing their captain really had to work hard for the whole 70 minutes. The home crowd was out in force and watched an end to end game. L2s started with lots of pressure, pinning Cambridge back in their half. After a short period of this, Caris Gregory made a great solo run up the right hand side to make a 2v1 on the keeper, which Mazz Chapman finished off on the far post. After Cambridge were awarded several short corners in a row, they were able to convert after a shot saved by GK Bea Woodroof unfortunately was tapped in on the post. The rest of the half was equal and remained at 1-1 going in at the break.
After a team talk from Captain Whiting and featuring Millie Collins, the L2s knew exactly what was needed to keep applying the pressure to Cambridge and take home some points. Cambridge took a goal early on from another short corner which was dribbled in over the line, before Caris Gregory went for another drive up the pitch by herself, this time taking on the GK and being awarded a penalty flick, which she successfully converted. The work ethic from the L2s was immeasurable, every player was fighting for every ball and running their socks off. It was only in the last ten minutes that Cambridge scored from yet again a penalty corner. A strike from top of the D was deflected by a Bury defender and went over the heads of keeper Bea Woodroof, Lauren Turner and Sinead Collins, taking the score to 3-2. Although ending in a loss, another well competed game from a newly promoted team who were missing vital players, and still managed to push Cambridge to the last ten minutes!
