With some brand new youth players joining the team, and some more experienced players lending a hand, the Bury 6s had a slightly different team than usual this week. Their game against Felixstowe’s 3rd team started at a fast pace that was held by both sides throughout - Bury was grateful for the subs at times! Within the first few minutes Bury had their first short corner. An amazing shot on goal from Hayley Wighton was deemed a smidge too high and ended in Bury not being awarded the goal (it will however stay a goal in the Bury players’ hearts). Towards the end of the first half, midfielders Oi-Wa Whitmore and Georgina Garner pushed up through the fast Felixstowe players and the first goal was finally awarded to Hayley.

Felixstowe came back hard in the second half trying to redeem themselves, but Emma Whiting’s meticulous defending skills, with the help of debut players Connie Gardner and Nieve Redford made it nearly impossible to get to goalie Charlotte Whiting, who finished the game with a clean sheet and some great saves. Vice captain Ali Bailey and Captain Emily Denney worked up the sidelines, taking every opportunity to get the ball (and keep it) in the attacking 25. A well timed pass from Sara Foster outside the D allowed Nikita Eastes a lovely reverse edge pass to Fran Clear, who finished the job and Bury took the lead.

Second time match player Hannah Oliver got man of the match with her ability to always be in the right place at the right time. (And seemed to never get tired!).

When the final whistle blew the score was 2-0 in Bury’s favour. Everyone at today’s game showed up and gave their best, and had a lot of fun. Felixstowe fought hard and good hockey was played by all. The day was ended with a visit to the beach and some toe dipping in the icy water.
